My Gyaru Life

Highlights from the Past Decade

Posted on December 29, 2019December 27, 2019

This past decade? Absolutely smashed it. Yes, I might not remember everything that I have achieved but I know that I’m going to be ending it on a high doing everything I love (i.e. watching Mock the Week with my hubby and my cat, maybe). I definitely do not have 20/20 vision – see what I did there – but I know that this next decade is going to be amazing. Why? Because I said so! And there’s tremendous power in speaking things into existence.

So to tie the end of the decade nicely, I have decided to write the top things that I have achieved (and remember) from the last ten years. Here goes!

I found out about Gyaru

It happened when I realised that Lolita fashion (another subculture in Japanese fashion, with no connections at all to the book) was not really my thing and I stumbled on this picture of “hime gyaru”. They were so beautiful, and I loved their makeup! And the rest is history. You can read more about my journey (and flick through embarrassing photos) right over here.

I achieved First Class Honours and became a graphic designer

My university years were challenging, but I smashed it and got a First Class Honours in graphic design, and a few months later started a three-month internship at a design agency before landing a permanent role there. People have told me that adult life was hard and it is! But I’m getting there. I got promoted back in August so I’m now a mid-weight champion designer. Woohoo!

I travelled to Japan

I knew I wanted to go to Japan as soon as I accepted the fact that I, Lizzie, loved all things Hello Kitty and cute anime art. I had spent years trying to hide this part of myself to fit in at school but when I started college I put my foot down and was like NOPE, I am not going to hold back any more! My hubby and I went to Japan a couple of years ago, and one of the highlights was going to Sanrio Puroland (which is basically a Hello Kitty resorts world)! Unfortunately I got really ill after a few days in Japan so couldn’t enjoy the food or sights as much as I wanted to, but this just gives me more reason to go back.

I turned my love for writing into blogging

Though I might not be the author I wanted to be when I was 14, I have channelled my love for writing into this blog. I love that I can document my life in these (internet) pages and how I can just write as if I am chatting with my friends (because you are my pal, my friend, as cheesy as that sounds). Hello Lizzie Bee has been through a lot of changes since 2009-early 2010, and has become a huge part of my life.

I went to my first (and defo not last) int gal meet!

And gosh I was a nervous wreak but I had such an amazing time and it was the beginning of many trips abroad to gyaru meets. Travel definitely makes friendships stronger, and I’m going to be super soppy when I say that I’m so happy that I travelled with Chewiee because she’s a great pal and I love her!

I’m living my dream life

When I was 11, I wanted to be a fashion designer; 13, an author; 14, a model; 15, a linguist; 17, a graphic designer… So needless to say, I was a multi-passionate person! And you know what? I became all of those things! I am working my dream job of being a graphic designer and a hobby as a blogger, which involved writing and dressing up all nice and pretty. I am slowly going back to my roots by learning Mandarin Chinese at university and I cannot wait to speak it fluently.

I met and married the one I love

I wanted to save the best to last – but over the past ten years I have met, dated, and married the one I love. I’m currently batting away the baby questions because we’re not quite ready for that, but I’m so happy knowing that I’m spending my life with him!

So, 2010s, you’ve been a treat! Yes, I’ve been through some really tough times but I managed to keep my head up and trudge through it all. I cannot wait to see what 2020 will bring (and will most definitely write up all of my goals for the new decade!)

What were your highlights from the past decade?

Love,
Lizzie xx

I’ve written a similar post, to be published tomorrow – but (spoiler alert) my highlight was meeting my wife in 2010 and all the changes that have come from that!

Aww you accomplished and did so much during 2010-2019! 😀 I love how you shared these on your blog too.

I know for a fact you’ll go back to Japan one day and get to do the things you missed out on due to falling ill. 🙂

It’s amazing what can happen in just 10 years. And I feel lucky that I have been reading your blog for a lot of it. I hope that we will continue to have a lot of successes in the next years to come!
