Reasons why I love the new EGG magazine (+ mag scans!)

Posted on June 9, 2019November 16, 2019

EGG, gosh, where do I start? There was a public outcry when EGG magazine announced that they were ceasing publication a few years ago, but now – along with a set of new gyaru models – they’ve brought out a new mook (magazine book) for their June 2019 issue. I am so pumped about this issue; not only because it’s EGG, my favourite magazine, but because of how gal all of the models were. The old-school gyaru spirit is back! Here are some other reasons why I love this new issue…

There’s a nice balance between flashy and toned-down makeup

On one page you have Kirei with her over-the-top gyaru makeup, and on the other you have Nagi Takazawa rocking makeup with *gasp* eyelash extensions. I’m not used to this concept, but it looks so good with the softer, more onee gyaru, look! What completes this toned down eye makeup is that she’s sporting a tan and has light brown/blonde hair, and without those elements she probably wouldn’t have been able to get away with it… Maybe this will be good for those who can’t wear lashes? I’m kind of intrigued to see how the gaijin gyaru community reacts to this.

The clothes are incredibly easy-to-adapt for everyday life

One of the reasons I love EGG magazine is that the coords (aka outfits) are so easy to wear, and you could replicate some of their items in your local stores. They were my number one inspiration when I first started gal, and still are to this day, because of this. While I was flicking through my mum looked over my shoulder and commented, “That’s nice and looks quite normal“, which would usually bother me (as I love how unique gyaru is) but she hit the nail right in the head – EGG have taken “normal” clothes but made them super gal. I’m also absolutely lovin’ all of the tropical and animal prints in this issue!

Easy gyaru hair tutorials

It’s accessible to all

There are some easy hairstyle tutorials in there for high-schoolers, showing that you can be gyaru no matter how old (or young) you are! Plus it’s also good for those like me who aren’t very good at hair styling and shows that you can be gyaru with the simplest of hairstyles.

Funny faces

It screams “get wild and be sexy!”

I giggled when I saw the pages of their funny faces, and I’m so glad that EGG still does this because it shows the true gyaru spirit – looking stylish and having fun! There were a few other pages where they’ve done a water challenge (I think?) and were frolicking around on the beach and I LOVED IT.

EGG magazine flatlay

And there we have it! I had so much fun flicking through this mook and I’m already looking forward to the next one. For those interested, I bought mine through CDJapan and they were incredibly easy to use, so buy one to support EGG magazine! If not, my friend Reila has done some magazine scans for you to scroll through.

What did you think of this new issue of EGG magazine?

Love,
Lizzie xx

    Wow, thanks for this!

Is it just me or can you tell how much the Korean makeup trends of the past few years have influenced the makeup on the models as well? I was like ‘waah?’ at a couple of the photos because I wasn’t quite expecting it. (^^; I do like that there seems to be a range of makeup styles in this issue. Though my favourite thing about this issue is probably that overalls model with the one strap off — I wear my overshorts/shortalls like that all the time! ヽ(*^∇^*)ノ

I’m also gonna fess up and say I’ve never worn falsies. orz I get asked if I’m wearing them when I layer my mascara right, so just never actually got around to wearing them… Tbh I think I’ve just always been scared of the glue being so close to my eyes. Now I find myself wanting to try them and there are gyaru models other than Kaoru Watanabe not wearing them! xD ’tis always my luck. Ah well. Thanks again for posting!

I totally agree! Eye bags are still the rage right now which I don’t mind so much as its super cute, but there are quite a few makeup tutorials that are more toned down.

Wow really? Aah I can’t live without false lashes! You’re so lucky you have long lashes… I wouldn’t be able to get away with just wearing mascara!

        It’s difficult going without them, tbh. I wouldn’t really recommend it — it’s terrible for lashes in the long run (getting it all off without pulling out lashes can be a nightmare, ugh). I used to justify it because I hardly ever went out, but now that I’m itching to go out more I’m like waaah *flail*. Especially since I can’t find my favourite mascara anymore. ;___;

Have you heard of the brand Sugarpill before? They’ve got some lashes I’ve fallen in love with (Lullaby and Dazed in particular), and I’m curious to know what you think of the styles. Their makeup is pretty cute, too.
