How to Do Gyaru Makeup for Westerners

There are endless archives of gyaru makeup tutorials out there; whether it be through old magazine scans, on Pinterest, or on YouTube, but it can be disheartening to read/watch when you have Western features. You might feel like it is impossible to do gyaru when you’re not Asian but I’m here to hold your hand and to tell you, gently, that you’re wrong. It is possible for us to do gyaru makeup, and I’ve gathered some Western gyaru makeup tutorials that my fellow gaijin gyaru (non-Japanese gyaru) have done, and left their links in case you want to check out their blogs/YouTube channels… So, enjoy!

Easy Gyaru Makeup & Hair Tutorials

There are times where I wish I could do gyaru at work. The thing is that prioritise sleep over slapping my face on with makeup, which makes those weekends for dolling up even more precious. However I do want to be an everyday gyaru wherever possible so I spent the last few weeks collecting lots of easy hair and makeup tutorials and then I thought… Why not share this collection with my readers?

Below you’ll find a whole set of hair and makeup tutorials that are great for the everyday gyaru/gal! I hope you find them useful!

Can I Be Gyaru If…?

Recently I’ve noticed that those new to the wonderful world of gyaru are forever asking questions like, “Can I still be gyaru if I can’t wear circle lens?” or “Can I be gyaru with [x] colour hair?” Because of this, I have decided to create a big post on the most popular questions asked in our community.

How To Be A Gyaru & A Student

gyaru student, how to be gyaru and a student, work

This seems to be one of those most difficult questions that gaijin gals (gyaru) face; how can we still be gal if we go to school/college/uni/work? It is extremely high maintenance, and in some places it’s not acceptable to be caked up in makeup.

Life as a student is… Difficult. I’ve had months where I just slipped on my glasses and grabbed a t-shirt and jeans before heading out of the door. Sometimes I didn’t even bother getting dressed and worked in front of my computer at home with a cup of (relatively strong) coffee next to me. I’m amazed how some people manage to party all night and drink their money away with all the stuff they have to do but I guess they have the time and money for it.

How does gal fit into this busy schedule of mine? I’m not going to lie but I’ve had a lot of difficulty with it and yet I managed to pull through. It’s been two years since I’ve started uni so I decided to write up a little “how-to” post for those going into uni/college/work! Please note that I’m only going to underline the basics, it’s up to you to adapt these to your gal style.

Treading Water

Wow okay this was totally not supposed to happen, but I just found myself with nothing to do and I thought: why don’t I doll up? It’s been ages since I’ve done so so I thought I’d give it a shot. As you may or may not already know that I haven’t really had any quality time to myself as I’ve been doing lots of uni work – so it was nice to just relax and do nothing all day!

But because I haven’t been blogging in so long or taking a break from my work (apart from yesterday’s post) I found myself treading water; I’m not really going anywhere but I’m still trying to get through all of these barriers that are like waves crashing over me. I’m at loss of what to do and I just want to sit back and not have to worry about anything.

The thing is that I want to do my absolute best at getting the grades needed at uni to be a successful designer, and I’m just dying to get there.

Anyway, enough of this rambling and onto the photos! I’m going to do gal around once a week to keep me going for the #dandie challenge on instagram! #dandie is basically a gyaru tag game to where Danyy and Chaudie try to do our best gal look and post it in instagram. Anyone who wants more exposure to other gals are welcome to participate, and it’s created by the lovely Chaudie and Danyy 😀

Dress from Boohoo.com, belt from Blue Banana,
accessories from Primark and eBay

It actually turned out to be a lot colder than expected so I put on a few more layers!

Sweater from Select

I was initially going to put my hair into pigtails because it’s been ages since I’ve actually done with my hair. I have the hair skills of a turtle D: I couldn’t decide whether to keep my hair down so I went along and took some photos with pigtails anyway.

So… I don’t know which one to pick! Which do you guys prefer; hair down or hair up? ^^

That’s all for now~
