How to do Gyaru Makeup in Hot/Humid Weather

Posted on June 28, 2020November 28, 2021

The first time I wore gyaru makeup in the summer was when we went on holiday to Spain back in 2011. We were shopping in a small market when my sister pointed out that my lashes were falling halfway down my face. I quickly hurried away and fixed it, but my makeup was constantly melting right off for the whole day (and the days after that)! Luckily that doesn’t happen nowadays, and I’ve got a few tips and tricks under my belt, so here’s how to do gyaru makeup (and gyaru in general!) in summer when it’s hot/humid.

How to Do Gyaru in Summer

How to do gyaru makeup in summer

It’s prime time!

The best makeup often has the best base, and I highly recommend wearing primer on your eyelids at the very least. This will give your makeup something to “stick” to, making it last longer. (You can actually use sunscreen as your primer if you don’t have any makeup primer to hand).

Pop on some sunscreen beneath your makeup

As previously mentioned, you can actually use sunscreen as a primer if you don’t have any to hand, and you should be wearing at least a little bit of sunscreen no matter how sunny it is to protect your beautiful skin (something I’ve learnt when reading up about Korean beauty secrets). This is applied underneath your makeup. Sometimes I skip out on foundation and just wear sunscreen as you are, ideally, supposed to top it up every couple of hours. Having a sunburnt face is not a good look!

Swap out foundation with a tinted moisturiser

Sometimes it just doesn’t feel nice wearing foundation in really humid weather, so swap it out for some lightweight tinted moisturiser instead. I always moisturise my skin because I get eczema patches, and it’s good to keep your skin hydrated during the summer.

Use concealer sparingly

I find that concealer can sometimes make your makeup look a bit cakey so I would only use it sparingly as and when I need to. Then I would set that lightly with some powder.

Wear waterproof products

Swap out your usual makeup products for waterproof ones to make your gyaru makeup last longer! That way you don’t have to worry about your makeup running down your face when you’re jumping into the swimming pool (or beach).

Use makeup setting sprays

Makeup setting sprays are your best friends in summer, as they can make your makeup last a lot longer. All you need to do is spritz your face once you have completed your makeup (at a good distance – there’s usually a recommendation on the bottle) and you’re good to go!

Always carry blotting papers and a fan

Before blotting papers, I was using tissue, and trust me… It wasn’t a good look. Blotting papers are great for dabbing away the sweat so it’s always ideal to keep some with you when you’re going out. I also pack a little fan wherever I go and it’s super handy! You can either get those small battery-powered ones or go for a more traditional fan.

Use strong af lash glue

It’s safe to say that I ditched using Eylure after our trip to Spain, and have been using DUO lash glue ever since. It’s never failed me and I would highly recommend it to other gyaru (I use the green version as it’s hypoallergenic)! I’ve also used Rimmel in the past which is mega strong if you’re not a fan of DUO.

Skip out on lower lashes (or go old school gyaru!)

Okay, I can’t believe I’m actually going to say this, but… *deep breath*

Maybe go old school and skip out on lower lashes.

*Gasp shock horror* Lizzie you said WHAT?! I know, I know, BUT – and I cannot stress this enough – this is only really going to work if you amplify your eyeliner and/or work on your tan. An alternative method is to wear lash extensions but, again, you got to make your eye makeup super dramatic or have a deep tan and go old school gyaru. Georgie does really good makeup looks without lower lashes, and I’ve included some old egg scans (thank you Lala!) to give you some inspiration.

*Bonus* Gyaru hairstyle ideas for Summer

Soooo I decided to do a little section on the gyaru hairstyles I normally do during the Summer. I avoid using heat in hot weather (and, to be honest… all year around) as the thought of using heated curlers when it’s super humid is just not ideal. What I do is put my hair in plaits when it is slightly damp after washing my hair, and then style that however I want to. Here are some other cute hair tutorials I put together that are super easy and good for humid weather.

  • Cute gyaru hair ideas for work

And that’s how I do gyaru makeup (and hair) in summer! I hope that that was helpful to you, and if you have any more tips and tricks on how to survive in the heat then please let me know.

Until next time!

Love,
Lizzie xx

Super interesting how the weather can affect makeup! I always make sure to apply sunscreen in the summer. It’s the first step I take when getting ready in the morning. Also love the hairstyles at the end!

And yes sunscreen is SO important, especially on your face as your nose does catch the sun! I’m going to start wearing it every day now (even in winter) to help improve my skin. And thank you so much!

Awh thank you so much for reading! And yep it sure does, as it makes your makeup stick really well to it so you can use it as a substitue (well I do in the summer anyways haha).

Thanks for sharing your tips! I really struggle with makeup in the heat because my skin is dry and I have to wear quite greasy formulas, but then they slip and slide around your face in the humidity, it’s a nightmare! x
