What ‘Get Wild and Be Sexy’ Means to Me

‘Get wild and be sexy!’ is one of our most famous gyaru taglines, and originated from EGG magazine (a famous gyaru magazine which boomed in the 90s) and was also featured in this parapara video with gyaru goddesses Yumachi, Aina, and Yunkoro. It describes everything a gyaru should be – from our outrageous clothing to our extroverted mannerisms. But I’ve always struggled with the concept of that tagline as I’ve always classed myself as a more introverted gal, so today I’ve done a collab with the wonderful Reila from The Name I Love on what it means to us (I will drop a link to her blog post at the bottom for you to read her POV!)

What “get wild and be sexy” means to me…

Being comfortable in my own skin

Finding my confidence was one of the hardest things in my gyaru life, especially when wearing it in public, but that’s what comes with wearing something outside of the norm. But there’s nothing sexier than being comfortable with how you look and feel – whether you’re head-to-toe in brand items or wearing nothing but clothes from your local store. I felt super sexy in this outfit I was wearing in this post, even though all items came straight from Boohoo and Missguided, all because I was comfortable in my own skin and flaunted my style (and had that sliver of skin showing around my midriff)!

Being my unapologetic self

I used to hide the ‘real me’ when it comes to my workplace, but over the past year I’ve come out of my shell and now people know me for being quirky and fun! They didn’t even bat a eyelid when I rocked up in my pink Hello Kitty onesie and I absolutely love that about them. I wouldn’t have dreamed about being my true self and for embracing my passions if it wasn’t for gyaru – sure, it’s ‘just clothes’, but it allowed me to build up my confidence (as mentioned above) and say “yep, this is me!”

Wearing flashy clothes + accessories

No matter what substyle you’re into, whether it’s something as casual as himekaji or dramatic as manba, gyaru is flashy and that’s why I love it so much. I always feel like I’m the queen of the world whenever I step out in my gyaru gear!

Doing karaoke with my gals (with a cocktail in hand)

This is more to do with the ‘get wild’ part, but I always feel wild when I’m belting out some awful karaoke with a cocktail in hand. If I were a bit more extroverted then I would say that going out to nightclubs and dancing the night away would make me feel more ‘wild’, but alas, I am a bit of an introvert so being in a private room singing karaoke is so much better for me.

Yes!!!! I love this post!! Being your unapologetic self and feeling like the queen of the world, like you said, is exactly what ‘get wild and be sexy’, and gal culture is all about to me too! It’s one of the most important lessons of gal style I think~

I think ‘get wild and be sexy’ was Egg magazine’s original slogan in the early 2000’s maybe even before that.
To me the line signifies a sense of agency that sets gals apart from other girls. Gals do whatever they please without caring about the general opinion or etiquette. Gals create their own standards of beauty and code of behaviour, that may be wild compared to the demure, chaste and well-behaved ideal that is promoted among women in japanese society.
So whatever you do, if you do it regardless of what people think, and you do it completely based on your own ideals and wishes, that, I think, is ‘wild and sexy’ and is the essence of gal ??

Awh thank you so much Charlotte! <3 And thanks for letting me know about the slogan, too, I will edit this post! <3
And I totally agree with you. I haven't met people as fun loving and daring as gyaru - which is why I love them so much!

I love your houndsooth trousers, they are so cute! I agree with your definition, I think it’s important to feel good in your own skin and style and not have to care what others think! I really like that imagery of singing karaoke with cocktail in hand haha. Thanks for sharing girl!!

I love everything in this post! Sorry, I know I say that in every post I comment on but it’s true! I’m glad that gyaru lets you become more extroverted. And that’s exactly how I feel about ‘Get Wild and Sexy’ to me! To be able to borrow a personality, I otherwise wouldn’t have, if it weren’t for small but important things like fashion and makeup xx!

Awh I loved this post! I think the thing with a tagline like this is that you can make it your own. Because sexy and wild will mean different things to everyone so I love how you’ve totally made it your own! You look gorgeous, as always! ❤

I love your outfit, it looks so pretty!! It’s so lovely to see someone feeling confident in their own skin, I need to get better at that and start feeling more confident about myself because it’s something I struggle with so much! I probably need a drink in hand to feel a bit wild haha, gives me a bit of confidence!

I’m in love with that choker. I just had to point that out first xD
Well, in fact, the whole coord with pink & houndstooth has me amazed cuz I never thought of getting trousers like this for gyaru outfits ♥
I agree 100% with your POV of “Get wild, be sexy” ♥ Even though I’m not introvert (or at least that’s what I think! haha) gal always pushes me out of my comfort zone and to embrace my sexy side on top of my kawaii/”cute” side. ?

Awh thanks Tsuki! It’s one of my favourites and sometimes I feel like I wear it way too often tehe.
It was totally an impulse buy – I didn’t expect to buy it myself but when I tried it on I KNEW I had to buy it!

Yessss and that’s what I love about gal! Without it I probably won’t be doing much outside and would stay at home with my cat and a book.

You get it ? ! You are so right about what you say. Gyaru is more than only fashion, the lifestyle and the community makes me happy. All in all, like you say, “Finding my confidence was one of the hardest things in my gyaru life, especially when wearing it in public, but that’s what comes with wearing something outside of the norm.” Sticking out of the norm, is a little fight but worth it.
Love your blog ♥ Thank you for your effort to keep the community alive with your beautiful contributions!

Yes to all of this! EGG was one of my fave jfashion publications and I aim to collect all that I can. Because it celebrated all styles. And Gyaru was the only fashion that made me feel comfortable with who I am!

Yes, me too! I’m so glad I kept all of my mags as they are so hard to get nowadays.
